Three people, including a 19-year-old woman, died from suffocation during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City following Mexico's 2-0 victory over Ecuador, authorities said.

The other victims were a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man. According to the city's health authority, emergency services treated three unconscious people at separate locations along Paseo de la Reforma before transporting them to hospital.

"After performing first aid and CPR techniques on the patients, they were transferred to a hospital for specialised medical care," the health authority said.

All three were later confirmed to have died from suffocation and were identified by their families.

More than one million people gathered across the capital, primarily around the Angel of Independence monument, to celebrate Mexico's first World Cup knockout-stage victory since 1986, according to the city government.

Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada expressed her "most sincere condolences" to the victims' families and pledged support in the coming days. She also urged supporters to "always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy."

The victory sparked widespread celebrations at the Estadio Azteca and throughout the city, with fireworks continuing long after the final whistle. Before the match, Brugada had advised fans planning to gather near the Angel of Independence to choose alternative locations because of the large crowds already assembled there.

Mexico's victory secured a place in the World Cup round of 16.
